about

Following his 2020 Blip Discs EP (Kimbalagala), Swordman has returned to the label alongside Village Cuts with a bassy club-ready track combining Swordman’s signature Luganda/English flows with the syncopated bouncy bass of UK Funky, and the shuffling synths and stabs of House and Garage.

The song and music video (coming soon) revolve around Swordman’s hometown, Ggaba, a suburb of Kampala and only a stone’s throw away from his friends and musical companions in the Nyege Nyege family. ‘Digida’ is a type of dance, a Luganda word with which Swordman stirs up the Ugandan neighbourhood through which he walks in the music video. The video is directed by Swordman Kitala himself in collaboration with filmmaker Arnold Kigongo.

The collaboration between Swordman and the Blip Discs label began when they met back in 2016, at the second year of the now legendary Nyege Nyege festival. Following this, Swordman’s debut 12” single was released on the label, and, later, a month-long recording session was organised for Swordman’s debut EP. However, shortly after recording this material, Swordman fell seriously ill and was forced to put his music on hold. Since recovering, a string of successful releases has found Swordman on stronger form than ever, having discovered a new sense of purpose in his life and music.

Village Cuts (composed of Michael Elvé and Matt Polly) provide the perfect track for Swordman Kitala on this release. Their signature futuristic sound continues to connect the dots from a wide range of influences and cements this collaboration as one of the freshest sounds of this summer.
